“So Karin.” Raven flipped open her notebook and took out a pen. “Why did you do whatever you did?”

Karin sighed. “Well, I guess it’s because I was desperate for money. The other guy, George, and me were promised some cash if we did it. But if we got caught, we were on our own.” He slammed his fist into the wall.

“Who was the boy you drowned?” Robin asked.

Raven scribbled it down. She looked up. “How old was he?”

Karin shrugged. “Not sure. Maybe around your age. All I know is, he was part of Crime Fighters.”

Robin gasped, and Raven kicked him. “How do you know?”

Karin rubbed his eyes and yawned. “You two sure ask loads of questions.”

His eye caught something orange in the corner of the jail cell. “Hey.”

“Yeah?” Karin looked suspiciously into Robin’s face.

“Why is your pumpkin still here?” Robin pointed at some pumpkins which had served as Karin’s dinner.

“What are you talking about? I threw it out a long time ago.” Karin turned and let out a scream. “I swear, it was not supposed to be there!”

Raven frowned. “That doesn’t matter. Please just answer me.”

“Fine.” Karin opened his eyes. “Because I kidnapped him when he was walking out of this place, ok?”

“Was he related to anyone named Charlie and Beatrice?” asked Robin.

“I don’t know.”

Raven tapped her chin. “Did you immediately drown him or what?”

“Nah, we decided to go classic and put him somewhere first. So we chucked him in a warehouse.”

“Did he write any letters?” Robin held his breath as the words escaped his sister’s lips.

Karin’s eyes widened. “How did you know?”

Raven shrugged. “We’re asking YOU, mister. Why don’t you just answer us first?”

“Fine. Yes.”

“Did he say why?”

“Nope. But once he requested to write a third letter, we took him and drowned him.” Karin stretched. “I think I’m gonna call it a night.”

“Ok, thanks for being so co-operative,” Raven turned to go.

Karin lay down on what was supposed to be a bed. “Not that I have anything else to do.”

As the twins walked home, past the fields, both were deep in thought and didn’t say anything. Until they reached the end of the road.

“Hold it!” Robin threw his hand out and stopped his sister. “Look at that,” he whispered.

Raven looked up and gasped. “Was the scarecrow like that yesterday?” she whispered back.

“Nu-uh. But it could just be the neighbour moved it.” Robin walked around the scary scarecrow which stood in their path.

“No! I told you Mrs. Watson was a witch!” Raven hissed, hurrying to catch up with her brother. “Who in their right minds would place a scarecrow over there?” she jerked her thumb over her shoulder.

“Oh stop it. That theory is silly! Witches don’t exist.”

But when they turned the corner and their house came into view, both stopped in their tracks.

It was glowing white, and it seemed to be swirling.

“A portal!” Raven muttered. “Our house is a portal!”

Suddenly, the portal burst open and revealed a woman standing on a rope bridge in a jungle.

Then the portal shut down and returned to its normal state, a house.
